Prior to coming to SHAK, Keiser had spent the last year of his life in kennels with another rescue. Keiser is 9 ½ and had been with his previous owners for 8 ½ years, where he had been raised to “protect” his female owner. They gave him up when she fell pregnant, as they didn’t want to risk him being protective of the baby. Keiser is a beautiful boy, and had received a lot of interest. However, because of the role he had previously he is a very independent dog. He doesn’t like being pushed around, or restrained in anyway, and obviously he doesn’t take too well to cuddles unless he came to you for them.
This was proving to be a major problem when it came to re-homing him, as he would usually be returned within a 24 hour period for being naughty. The other rescue contacted us, as they were running out of ideas, and kennel staff were not really giving Keiser the attention he deserved. We agreed to give him a go, and so started Keiser's road to a loving home.
As I have already stated, Keiser is a strong willed character, but with us he was so calm. You need to respect his boundaries, and you need to give him his space when he needs it. He did so well at the farm he was staying at, that the owners couldn't bare to see him in kennels any longer, and offered to foster him.
We neuter all of our dogs, and in Keiser’s case it was a blessing in disguise that we do. During the operation it was discovered that he had a retained testicle, on which a cancerous tumour was growing. Test proved that the cancer hadn’t spread, which was a relief as a couple of weeks late a tumour on one of his rear feet also had to be removed, resulting in him having a toe amputated. Again, there was no cancer detected in the bones or lungs, and he now has a lovely big farm house to recuperate in and live out the rest of his time.
This dog was going nowhere, until he came to us. He was stuck in a rut and stuck in kennels for
a year! Without the Forever Foster scheme, he would still be there.
